Siliguri has too many restaurants given it is an important tourist centre, the gateway to Darjeeling. I find food here is a lot dearer than in Kolkata.
On 26th August, a friend and I took lunch at Ranjit. I was giving a treat to him that I owed him. We had veg. biriyani, masala paneer and lassi. The food was average at best. The price was a tad too high. The bill was around 220.
On 29th August Dr. MSM gave me a treat at New Ranjit of Hillcart Road. We had veg. biriyani, malai kofta, masala paneer and washed it down with Thumps up. The food was really mouth-watering. The bill read 219/-
New Ranjit and Ranjit are two vegetarian hotels side by side on Hill cart Road – near Venus more. New Ranjit is the better one in terms of food quality and cheaper too!
On 2nd September Dr. JJS gave me a treat at Tai wah. Tai wah is known for authentic Chinese dishes. Dr. JJS missed the old charm though – he used to frequent this place during his college years. We took rice, a prawn dish and 2 chicken dishes. Tangy and spicy! Slurp slurp! The bill was 342.
On 3rd September, we had a party at Sudhriti, an AC restaurant opposite North Bengal University. We had mutton polao, a chicken side dish, rosogollas and ice-cream. The food was great. We had contributed 110 each.
On 5th September, Dr. MSM gave a treat to me and 2 friends of mine at Tashi. Tashi, about 7 minutes walk from my college, has a bar-cum-restaurant and a separate family restaurant. Unfortunately, they are completely neglecting the restaurant part these days. I have eaten there many times before but had a shocking experience this time. Terrible service and seriously bad food left us in a bitter mood. A real waste of time and money. We left after giving them a piece of our mind.
On 7th September, Dr. MSM and I stopped by the all new IRCTC food plaza at NJP station before catching our respective trains. The food in this case was not the main attraction. What was really special was the never-before experience of having quality food at a railway station. I was surprised to see this well decorated, squeaky clean eatery! The food is really nice for a train station. A plate of egg biriyani + raita combo cost 80. Coffee was 10 a cup.
