Reading Spree

Posted in: Kolkata, Books

I never failed to notice the large stacks of books every time I walked along the footpaths of Golpark. Yet it never really struck me I can actually take those books. Strange of me indeed. After all what are the books doing there other than waiting to be read by readers like me?

As this revelation dawned on me I have been reading delightfully ever since. In a few weeks time I have taken the following books having read four already.

  • Five Point Someone - Chetan Bhagat
  • Are You Afraid of the Dark - Sydney Sheldon
  • Angels and Demons - Dan Brown
  • Outbreak - Robin Cook
  • Digital Fortress - Dan Brown
  • The Other Side of Me - Sydney Sheldon

You may choose to buy or borrow. I of course chose the latter. At first I took FPS by Chetan Bhagat and a novel by Sidney Sheldon. (Mind you, it’s not that I am a great Sheldon fan or anything. Just that I have never read Sheldon before and wanted to try) I was charged Rs. 110. Returning them I got back Rs. 85!

On my 2nd day there, I borrowed A&D and Outbreak which would set me back by Rs. 150 which I din’t expect. The books I returned have already made Rs. 85 and I needed to cough up 65 rupees more which I did’nt have. Taken aback, I asked the man to exclude one book stating my problem. He then asked me how much I had and satisfied himself with the lone fifty-rupees-note I had leaving me walking my way back home.

Last Monday I took DF and The Other Side of Me and still reading them.

The books there are either secondhand purchases or illegal prints. While reading ‘Are You Afraid of the Dark?’ I found several pages missing in two places which was really disturbing. Good for me that I searched and downloaded the PDF and read the missing portions. :)
