Got A Reliance Data Card

Let me share my experience having used this wireless internet soultion from Reliance for almost a fortnight. Anyone considering to buy this may find this post useful. I have also mentioned how to improve the connection speed.
Need For Wireless
I bought my laptop some months ago and was considering what internet plan to go for. Here in Siliguri I can’t go for my favourite Dataone (that I have at home) as that needs a wired landline connection. Also, a pity that Airtel broadband is not yet available in Siliguri. So wireless seemed to be the perfect option - it also has the carry-it-along advantage. I was unsure which data carrier to go for until a friend told me about Reliance’s freedom @ night plan.
Reliance Netconnect Plans
There are many plans to choose from. All are expensive I tell you. The one that suited me is the Freedom @ night plan. It offers unlimited surfing in night hours i.e. 10 pm - 6 am for a monthly rental of 400 INR and daytime surfing charges 0.50 INR per minute.
Getting The Data Card
The data card comes mainly in 2 models - USB and PCMCIA. The prices are 2890 INR and 2850 INR respectively. There is an activation charge of 330 INR. I went for the USB one as it can be used in both desktop and laptop. Besides, I thought there might be some heating problem with the PCMCIA as it is internal.
To get the data card you have to go to any Reliance Webworld or Reliance Communications outlet or computer shops. I got it from a Reliance Communications outlet on Hazra road (opposite Paramount Nursing Home near Hazra more), Kolkata. As for any other postpaid connection, you need to carry these documents - an identity proof (voter card, PAN card, etc.), a residence proof (ration card, electric bill, phone bill, bank statement) & a passport size photo. After two days I got a call from reliance for verification, they even went to my house to verify - the formalities of a postpaid connection.
Setting it up
Run the installation disc and follow the instructions to install the Reliance Netconnect software. Insert the data card in the USB port or PC card slot when asked.
Netconnect software
The installer registers the data card as a modem and adds a dialer software. The software interface allows you to connect/disconnect, send/read SMS, make/receive calls, change settings. It shows the connection speed and bandwidth used. However, the bandwidth and timer readings are reset everytime you disconnect making it impossible to keep track of total bandwidth or time usage. Netconnect installs an internet optimizer software called Netbooster which accelerates surfing speed by reducing the quality of images in real-time.
Connection Speed
This modem relies on the same tower as mobiles. A mobile tower is too busy handling calls to and fro and you can’t expect a dedicated connection. As a result, the connection is erratic. I have used it in Siliguri and Kolkata.
Siliguri: Every now and then the connection dies - although it is connected speed becomes 0 kbps. Chatting on Gtalk is next to impossible as I get dc almost every minute. Surfing speed is not bad, does the job. After 1 or 2 o’ clock in the night the connection becomes somewhat stable allowing me to surf with peace of mind. Those who are on time-bound plans will find this erratic speed all the more irritating.
Kolkata: Better speed and surfing experience. The connection is more or less stable and doesn’t drop usually. Gtalk experience is also good.
Delhi: A friend who has used this in both Delhi and Siliguri reports far worse speeds in Delhi compared to Siliguri which is really surprising.
Tips to increase the speed
I continuously ping a server (google.com) to keep the connection alive. This way the connection remains active all the while and chances of getting dc are significantly lowered. By continuous pinging, I am able to chat in Google Talk. Surfing speed also improves considerably this way.
Now how to ping? Open command prompt and type ping www.google.com -t and hit enter key. The command prompt can be invoked by going to Start > Run and typing “cmd”. Vista users need to enter “cmd” in the Search box under the Vista Start menu.
Value for money
I think the tariff pricing could be lower. The price for the data card is reasonable but the monthly tariffs are not. The problem is the wirless internet market is yet to mature and there is not much competition in the sector. Reliance will tell you the reason behind such pricing is it is wireless. But considering the quality and speed of connection this is priced steep.
Other options
Tata indicom has a similar offering. Though I have not used that, I think both are in the same league when it comes to speed. The Airtel data card is priced higher at 5000 INR. Then another option is using your mobile phone as a modem and subscribing to the Airtel Mobile Office. Mobile Office offers unlimited internet access over GPRS or EDGE (depends on your area). The cost in West Bengal is 498 bucks per month. Then you have the 199/- monthly rental plan for BSNL postpaid users which is also unlimited EDGE internet.
Future
With the launch of 3G the speeds will increase.
Final Word
I can surf most sites smoothly. I can keep in touch with friends online. Can download small files of megabytes sizes. I can research on net. Chat with friends. Orkut pages load pretty fast. People at home can see me on webcam (video quality sucks due to slow speed). I can have voice chat with friends. So this serves most of my needs. However I can’t rely on Reliance if I have to give an online exam which is timed.

I use a Reliance Data Card too. And it works great in terms of speed and all, but the only issue i have is the voice quality during Skype (PC) to Phone calls.
Do you face any problems as such?

It has worst speed I have ever seen. I would say go for tata indicom rather then going this third class reliance data card.
People… Don’t even consider buying TATA indicom…. I just bought it as a clubbed offer from TATA Sky and what disgusting speeds about 20KbPS
Hey… very informative article. In fact am using a reliance data USB to connect and post to this article.
As you said, the connections drop sometimes, but on the whole it’s ok… Can’t use it for any critical browsing requirments.
The speed in chennai is quite good and am looking forward to using it in smaller cities. Hopefully what happened to your friend will be replicated.

First of all…Reliance and Indicom, both of the Companies are the worst in all other telecoms and ISP. Both of the companies, are not considered to be good with their services in their primary market, that is telecommunication. Then, how can they offer a secondary thing, until they improve and give their best in their primary field. It clearly suggests, that both of them just want to make money, nothing else. See others, MTNL, Airtel they both have ISPs,but one of the best services and speed one can ever expect….I dont understand, when ppl know very well, Reliance and Indicom, never complete the promises which they make, why you rely on them. If I can be the decider, I would surely go for the Boycott of this Bull shit companies….

RELIANCE data card is the worst service i have used till date, tata gives a better speed. even sarkari BSNL on GPRS gives a better speed for rs 110 per month unlimited time . reliance is famous for overbilling data card users / usb data modem users.

Hi sandeep, I think what you are complaining about the quality of images. Right? Well the netbooster software reduces the quality of images thus increasing surfing speed. You can either turn netbooster off or set it at a setting for moderate image quality - these options can be accessed by right-clicking the netbooster icon in the system tray.
Regarding videos, well with this connection speed you can’t except to watch videos on youtube or other similar sites.

i have been using huawei ec325 usb modem on xp. i recently plugged it into my new dell vista lappie. installed the cd software. the dialer software opened up fine. but cud not connect. i called customer care. they had a disgustign reply that it doesn run on vista!!! can anyone plz guide me..

@Abhijeet: there seems to be no vista driver for netconnect right now. reliance wrote in a mail that a vista driver will be released in 2 months. But 2 months have passed and they are yet to come up with a vista driver.
@Pratap: I think Reliance and Tata indicom are in the same league. The quality of service will vary from place to place depending on signal strength and network congestion. I have a friend using Tata indicom and he is not satisfied…. as much I am not with Reliance.
I have just purchased a USB data card and using it on my dell vista lappy. Getting a speed of less thn 10 kbps when I tried to call their customer care using the USB modem the answering machine says - Sorry, You are not authorised to make this call currently.
I also tried to ping google.com -t using cmd but it didnt work for me. Can any oneone tell me any other ways to improve the performance.

Hi…I am using Reliance data card ZTE model since Jan 2008…. on 650 freedom plan as of now, however I am not happy with the connection the though it say speed is 114 kbps its very slow as reliance is cheating you, and the gtalk keep getting disconnected ever now and then.. any way I am planning to sell the data card for Rs. 2000 as reliance will charge some amount for name transfer do let me know if any one is interested, as I m going ahead with airtel broadband

i m from rohtak(haryana),really reliance data cards have worest speed.i feel a am in totally loss with this net service.
I have encountered the worst Customer service from Reliance. I would recommend all not to use Reliance. I ordered a black USB Modem and was promised delivery within 2 days when I made the payment. 2 days later they inform that they do not have stock. I called them on a daily basis to remind them about the delivery. A week later they are at my door with a Datacard. I wanted a Black USB modem, so I sent the person back. A week later the same person return with a white USB MOdem and he kept saying that both the black and white are almost the same. He was not willing to understand what i wanted. I wanted a black USB modem. A week later they called and said that it was out of stock..These guys could have told this long back. I have Tata Indicom willing to provide a connection in 2 hours and here is Reliance not giving the product even after 1 month. They sound very convincing before they take the payment but the tone changes after the payment is received. HOPELESS AND PATHETIC!! is an understatement

First of all, thanks to Rituporno..u written so good article..would be usefull for so many ppl..i surprised to see why internet -data card market is poor with poor quality product, services and why so costly..now a days , every ppl having a system wants to have internet connection in thier room and i know every one prefers wireless connection.so i think net through wireless connection(datacard) is huge market in india…but why such big companies like Tata , Reliance are not looking at this angle that this is also huge market ..do business thats right..but do not provide such a bad product or services..i have a message for the companiesm like Tata, Reliance …if you can compete with the broadband connection providing better service with same prices..u will role this market as well…just look at the marketing of TataSky, DishTv…learn something..do your business but make ppl happy..!!!!!!

Their executive Surendra Pal Singh have took Rs.580/- cash as registration charges and said there will be no billing for 2 months and in next month I received bill of Rs.50/- and in second month I received a bill of Rs.730/- .
When I called up their call centre first I’ve been told that it might be becoz of mistake and would be rectified in 2-3 days and I’ll get a confirmation call. After 4 days I again called up and have been told that this bill is ok and the connection was not in a free offer and I’ve to pay the bill.

1.Keep data card in open place.If it is near door then it is very nice.
2.To keep connection alive follow a funny step just open the link www.indiatimes.com and click on wallpapers then click on play button.
3.Use branded USB extension so that you can place your data card more near the door.

You are absolutely right I try to use my Reliance ZTE CDMA 1X Modem MG880 bought a month back but i cannot even surf on it thought making calls and sending SMS is decent but you cannot surf the net, the connection dies every 10 seconds and it tries to reconnect but to no avail even trying for more then 10 minutes, it gets me irritating a lot.
I am planning to take a Data Card..Can anybody tell me if BSNL provides Data Card???
And how about using Reliance Data Card with a prepaid tarrif.
Are you confused with all the reviews clattering up? Caus i was in the same situation a while ago.. Ultimately i made up my mind to get a Reliance USB modem connection. I got the postpaid plan and enjoyed two months of awesome unlmited internet!! I ve been using it for 3 months now under Freedom@night plan @ 400/mnth… Only prob is that i leave my connection on for dwnlds and forget to switch it off in the morning…
. Thats not a problem anymore though..i ve written a program that automatically disconnects the connection at 6 am…. Cheers.

Reliance REALLY is total fraud.
I purchased the ZTE USB modem (black one) in Dec 07. The speed???? You call it speed? The turtles are much faster than this. As to register a complaint I went to the Reliance net connenct website and tried to register my feedback about my BAD…actually worst ever experience with any internet services.
But when I completed the feedback form and clicked on submit. The connection as usual went off. But I was determinant, so tried again. And this time after filling the form, I disconnected myself and connected before I clicked “submit” (as the “speed” is somewhat there for first 3 minutes, my friends using it must be knowing this).
But even then the form could not be submitted.
Then I wrote my feedback as an e-mail to the customer care. I did that 3 months ago…and yess..!! as you expect it from Reliance ….no replies till today.
When I talk to the customer care on phone, they just keep me giving stupid suggestions. Here are few of them:-
1. “Sir, please disconnect and connect again”.
2. “Sir, Please delete all the web browsing data.”
3. “Sir, please delete all temporary files.”
4. Sir,, please delete all contents in “prefetch” folder. (if anyone wants to try goto “run” and type “prefetch” and hit enter. vista users type “prefetch” in the “search bar” of start menu.)
5. “Sir, there is some technical problem in the server. Our technical team is trying to solve it. It will take 3 hours.”
I ask Mr Anil Ambani,
“Am I here to waste my time doing such nonsense things of cleaning my computer up to get a speed 0.000 kbps (yes u got it right zero point zero zero zero kbps)?”
“Am I here to borne the pains of your faults?”
“I am paying the price, then why am I not getting the promised services -the speed of 154 kbps and stable network connection?”
My recommendation:
“FORGET NET CONNECTION,…NEVER BUY ANY DAMN THING FROM ANIL DHIRUBHAI AMBANI GROUP RUN RELIANCE”
(Guess what? While making this post I faced the same problem and had to try 6 times (everytime I kept changing this figure) to post it. But I am determinant to “kill” reliance netconnect)
i bought relience data card EC 321 …most of time it shows DORMNENT MODE..even signal is full..same time TATA INDICOM WORKS in my area its in CHENNAI, OLD MAHABALIPURAM ROAD, PERUNGUDI..I complained many times but of no use..POOR SERVICE..

I have got a Datacard from your company. It was giving an exellent work to me and my office. But now for the past 15 days the net is not connecting for me. It is giving a error message as “The system is closed by remote computer”.
WE have tried in the local Reliance offices. Even though I am getting the same error message.
So please try to solve this problem as soon as possible. Because our company is paying payment without usage.

i read this article and try for purchase because mr executive suggest me in you area (I am wrking wth wipro infotech so i am roaming user and so many times i used in my home at chittorgarh in jaipur speed is quite good but in chittorgarh i find so many times recived data rate is 0 and after i suggested by call center lady with stupid question “chalu kare band kare rukh jaye data card nikal le fir usb me dale”"ab chalu ho jayaga check kare “).
Kya kare boss indian companyes are not ready to complete this wireless services and executive also no have perfact knowledge mr some one in reliance web world who is owner said to me this tachiq is running on micro wave tachnolgy so its not fast .in future reliance give you better service i smiled on him ,
as per my openion airtel MO mobile office is also not good provider and customer care executive of gpes ans mo heldesk are very funy character after conversation i planned to meet with him when i meet with sunita in jaipur i found she has no any computer exepriance and not about what is dial up or how user connect MO through mobile,,,,,,
so brothers just use dataone if you have after 5-10 years you got dial up speed on wireless tacniq
The only stuff i can say about the reliance data card is a total failure product (coustomer’s point of view).
but still from my side i hav downloaded net+ & GOOGLE chrome which has increased my surfing speed frm 10 kbs to 18 kbs..as ma lappies RAM is of 3GB …i can access by satisfaction wonder how others manage at this speed. but still i will shoot at last dont purchase RELIANCE DATA CARD its totally a fake product by so called Reliance communication.

I remember my days at reliance webworld for internet surfing , Which was awesome, since dat thing is optical fibre. ( lease line connectivity) I was comparing this Stupid black ,punny punk ( zte usb modem ) with that speed. Anyways, I am not a travel freak , i have also used Airtel gprs with my nokia n series phone with EDGE enabled( enhanced data for gprs evolution) for internet connection . and found no difference with reliance.(which infact is better and cheaper option)
I Would suggest for all speed seekers if they are looking at home . install B.S.N.L broadband or dataone. and have a wireless box to connect to your laptop And forget everything,.

I am also using Reliance Data Card and I can say that it is the best in terms of speed and service. it is very well to use. if you are also looking for the rapid pace of Internet connectivity, then it is the best option. using Reliance Data Card is a game of plug and play; thats it.

Never buy anything Reliance, They are a big fraud, I have purchased a ZTE usb card for Rs.2880/- from Thrissur Kerala, After some two days it started working , They offered me one month Unlimited with the card and After ten days the card stopped connecting , The customer care tells me they have not recieved ID proof and asks me to go to Web world, The web world says they have uploaded it and contact customer care and this is now day 7 , I have no internet , As I tell you never buy one , Now I’am going to web world everyday for a refund because the thing they sold me wont work, In the meantime I bought one from TATA-INDICOM and is now using it , Lets hope it works , Reliance is a total fraud NEVER FALL INTO RELIANCE TRAP PLEASE !!!!!!!

Hi. I bought the new ADM 100c USB datacard from Reliance. Apparently, this is the only datacard that is not MAC compatible. Does anyone have a driver yet, to make it compatible. Or, does anyone have any ideas of how I can switch the new card for an older model, like the Huwai, that is MAC compatible.

I’ve got some tips to escape from the virus (That planted by Reliance to increase the bill,thnk so)
1.Install Kaspersky internet security 2009 Latest version (B’cause the old version did not detected the virus and the app fucked up due to the same virus)

2.If u r using Mozilla Firefox u can get an extension called WOT means “Web Of Trust”, and be a member of it and block the address. It will also rescue u from other spyware sites.

Worst expeirence of browsing with Reliance Datacard. I have purchased the datacard 15 days back.Max speed i have got is 18.4 kbps and continuisally speed goes to 0 kbps.When i told this thing to reliance people in reliance world,they said they can’t do anything for this.

Think twice while purchasing a relience USB internet device. I had purchased the device on Jan. 2009 even there is a tower near by to my home I am getting only 80 to 100 KBPS … Some times it try my patients also…. I plan to drop the connection.. I was told that BSNL had a good wireless connection but you have to wait for one to two month and the price is arround 5000/-..

When I wanted to have the data cord for the laptop, the REliance outlet here at Ongole has given me the cdma data modem MG880 and it worked for some time though with such dead slow snail speed . Even that when the operating system was changed to vista it is not getting installed and my repeated complaints for the last one month did not find any solution. I intend filing petition before the consumer forum as such. The company perhaps has become unwieldy for the Ambani group to manage.

Hi All, I have bought a Reliance 3.1MBPS on April 09 and used only for demo purpose at the customer and hardly i have downloaded 30MB. For your info I am in the plan Rs. 499/- scheme. I have received a bill of Rs.409 and i have register a complaint with the customer care. They have reduced the bill to Rs.161/- accepting there is a fault. Again in May09 I have used for 8 times and downloaded maximum of 100MB with max of 6 hours. I was wondering when my data card get disconnected due to exceed the limit and request to pay Rs.2298 for activating the service. When I complaint and request for the data usage it is showing I have used for 76hours and total of 810MB download which is totally irrelavant, even with this I have to pay just Rs.405 + rental. I am going to file a case in the consumer court. Frustrated about Reliance billing process which shows there system is total fraud.
HI!! Please be careful they rip u apart when it coms to billing. In some of friend’s experience they have billed them over 4,000 Rs only in a matter of 3 days. All they did was keep skype on for a few hours. So be really carefully. They quote any amount and it does not even show on the bill.

It’s difficult to suggest. You can ask the sales agents to give a demo before zeroing on any particular brand. You can also check if some of your friends are already using wirless data cards and ask what speeds they are getting.
Since you live in Pune and plan to use internet at home, why don’t you go for a landline broadband connection?

it has worst speed i have seen, everytime i got just 4.4 kbps downloading speed, when the reliance tower is just 100 m from my house, after many complaints i didnt get any speedy response and also any option for upgrading the existing to 3.1 mbps modem, as per them i have to purchase the new one, which is too costly, i will not refer anyone to buy this.

Hi Umesh, You don’t need any SMTP address from Reliance. You need the SMTP address of the mail service you want to use. E.g. if you are using Gmail then you need the Gmail SMTP.

I found suprising it is not supporting OUTLOOK EXPRESS our company mail id is configured - I have invested 3500 rupees on the card and four to five months of 650 rupees being paid and HAS NOT USED THE CONNECTION ONE SINGLE MINUTE
I was tried running up to each of the RELIANCE OFFICES and they are so badly equipped to support HSD and do not have the basic info on the supports

The CDMA data card ZTE MG880+ is of old technology that CANNOT STAY connected.
The NETBOOSTER is linkcutter for any tailormade online software (for companies), which works well with TATA or BSNL. Airtel mobile/data card is the best for wireless connectivity.
BSNL is the best if you are stationary.
I bought reliance netconnet, the customer care is worst, billing is fraudulent.

I really need your help on this. I am using reliance Netconnect Broadband+ on Mac Book. Each time I insert the data card into the system all goes well till the time the conncetion get connected. As soon as it connects to the main server suddenly the screen disappers and it shows “application not responding”. But apart frm this internet works fine. But due to this error I can not disconnet the connection and henceforth can not plug the device out. Because of it when next time I restart the conncetion, it shows “unsafe removal of hardware”.
I am really worried as it might harm my Macbook.

The problem is I have got a Reliance High speed data card given to an employee and now the bill is for 23 GB upload in one month.
Thou we are very confused and the employee is very sure he has not used this amount of data, reliance has only handed us a login time and amount uploaded and downloaded, with no website address to confirm, and Reliance insists that the usage has happened.

i get an average of 300-500 kbps of browsing speed and 75-150 kbps of downloading speed….
browsing or downloading speed depends on the area you stay.
i stay at banglore.
though there is some prob;em with the data card that even if you r not browsing the bandwidth is getting used.!!
for downloading with a greater speed i would suggest the use of IDM,it increses the download speed upto 4x of your normal speed.

After reading all beautiful articles about Reliance worst service, I realize that I am not alone against Reliance Worst services. It seems Reliance is focussing more on selling the devices rather than providing internet services to people
I was searching in net to unlock the device( USB data card) through some software, If anyone has done so, please let me know.
I read in BSNL site that we can use our own data cards with some activation charges , after unlocking my data card i want to use for BSNL , Any comments?
