Friends using BSNL Excel Prepaid often ask me how to activate GPRS on their phones. One has to do the following:
Activate your GPRS service
Send an SMS to 3733 with the following text.
GPRS PRE
Soon, you will get a reply message like this.
Your GPRS facility will be activated shortly.
Configure your handset with the correct settings
For this, you can call up the customer care. Or better still, get it from the CellOne site for automatic setting download onto your mobile. There you can also get the settings for manual configuration, if you want that.
Now you can enjoy internet on your mobile. To know how much you will be charged, have a look at this.

I had sent msg ” GPRSPRE ” to 3733 to activate gprs, i recieved msg from 3733 as ” Your request has been accepted, the confirmation ewill be sent in 48 hours ”
After 48 hrs, customer care asked me to send model no on 8355. i sent ” Nokia N70 ” on 8355. then i recieved all settings and saved in my cell, then i was unable to activate gprs. the error seen is ” Packet data: paclek data not available, check network services”. the customer care is telling that my gprs will be activated within 48 hours, but after 48 hrs, same comment is here. they called me 3-4 times, and they asked me to change access point, change network selection to manual, switch off etc, but problem is not solved, then they asked me to call again to customer care. pls help me, my email id is mohitagarwal687@gmail.com

i also had the same problem, but after trying for almost a day, it got rectified. in my case the memory in phone showed that 100% was unused. when this memory not enough was displayed every time i pressed to save the GPRS settings . finally i decided to use up some memory, took a lot of pictures and a video file, then by the end of the day things started to move forward. now everything is working just fine. i don’t know how the gprs settings got saved. may be you need to press 0 to save the settings or you need to get packet data or to change some memory settings. i don’t know for sure

BSNL has came out with the option of GPRS over the prepaid connection. But difficutlites were faced by many to connect to the Internet. Even the settings that were downloaded from BSNL site failed the phone to connect to the Internet. The following is the actual working settings on a Nokia3650 phone so that it would connect through GPRS.
Steps to be followed to browse Internet over GPRS using a BSNL South India Prepaid Connection:
• Message “ACTGPRS” (SMS) to 3733.
• After sometime (may take up to 48 hrs) a message would be recieved saying that GPRS has been activated for the phone.
• Press the menu button of your phone; go to Tools -> Settings -> Connection -> Access Points.
• Click on Options. Select New Access Point -> Use Default Settings
• Give the following values:
- Connection Name -> BSNL GPRS
- Data Bearer -> GPRS
- Access Point Name -> bsnlsouth
- User Name ->
- Prompt Password -> No
- Password ->
- Authentication -> Normal
- Gateway IP Address -> 10.31.54.2
- Homepage -> http://bsnl.co.in/
- Connection Security -> Off
- Session Mode -> Permanent
• Press Back. A new access point is created now.
• Now using the default browser that came with the phone or with the custom browser installed later Internet could be accessed over the GPRS.
• If the default browser is used, open it and click on Options, go to settings and select the default access point as BSNL GPRS. Modify the remaining options if needed.
• Now this browser can be used to browse the Internet.

Using a phone with in built modem one can browse the Internet using their computer.
The following steps should be followed to use a computer and connect to the Internet using the BSNL GPRS connection on the phone. The following settings are for a Windows XP computer.
• Connect the bluetooth dongle to a USB port of the computer and install any drivers if required.
• Pair your phone and the PC over bluetooth. (For exact details of how to pair the PC and your phone, please refer to the user manual that came with the PC and the phone.)
• Once pairing is over the computer would recognize the phone as a modem over bluetooth connection also and will start the services required for it over a particular COM port.
• Now Open System Properties (Win Key + Pause/Break is the easiest way to do this). Click on Hardware tab and then on Device Manager button.
• This will open a window where all the hardware on your PC is listed. Click the ‘+’ to expand the Modems and select the “Standard Modem over Bluetooth link #x”
• Double click on it. The Properties window for this modem willopen. Click on Advanced tab. In the Extra Initialization Commands textbox fill – “AT+CGDCONT=1,”IP”,”bsnlsouth”” .Without this string the computer will not connect to the Internet, but it will throw a PPP Link error. Please note that the “bsnlsouth” mentioned above is the access point name in your GPRS connection settings of your phone. (or gprssouth.cellone.in)
• Click OK, close the Device Manager. * Go to Control Panel -> Network Connections. Click File -> New Connection. In the New Connection Wizard that comes up, follow these steps:
- Click Next
- Select Connect to the Internet and click Next.
- Select Set up my connection manually and click Next.
- Select Connect using a dial-up modem and click Next.
- Enter “BSNL GPRS” in the ISP Name text box and click Next.
- Enter “*99#” in the Phone Number text box and click Next.
- Chose the connection availability as per your discretion and click Next.
- Leave User name and password blank. Uncheck the check boxes if needed and click Next.
- Tick the check box to have a short cut on your desktop and click Finish.
• Switch on the bluetooth radio of the phone.
• Now double click on this connection’s icon and click on dial. It will dial and connect the computer to the internet!!!
• These procedures and settings help the BSNL subscriber to connect to the Internet over GPRS using a BSNL South India prepaid account. The above procedure works equally well for Post paid subscribers and for connection to PC/ laptop with USB cable.Specially useful for heavy users who have subscribed to BSNL post paid unlimited GPRS usage.

I want to activate GPRS on my cell. I sent sms as per your instructions to 3733. Furhter, Iam not getting how to download the settings. Didn’t get any help from BSNL website and customer care service is pathetic.

I activated the BSNL internet GPRSPRE by sending the message to 53733 but now I do not want this GPRS connection more because it is very costly and I am in roaming. My connection is from Haryana. I’m using bsnl preapaid GPRS (wap west) I’ve installed gtalk but when going to connecting, problem occurs that your connection to the server is not made successfull, thats why I had also contact to the GSM operator, he sent settings again but same problem occurs again. Yahoo messsenger also not opened on my phone. & when going to send mail window says “data server is not available”. & I can only open my gmail account, Yahoo account I cannot open. Is it seem problem or phone problem?

i have send the keywords ‘GPRSPRE’ on 53733 several times but it always replies with msg ”There is a error in retrieving data. We regret for your inconvenience.” although i hav configured all the settings for GPRS manually.
kindly tell me the solution for this problem.. is there any way to activate GPRS by website of BSNL itself.

I have BSNL prepaid connection on number 942806603. i am in Gujarat. I was using the same sim card on HTC touch and the GPRS was working fine. I switched to Nokia E71 but i cannot get GPRS configuration from BSNL for this handset.
I have however been able to get settings on the handset (E71) as given above. But could not get internet running. maybe i need some fine tuning.
